Directors, please log in with the credentials you have been provided.
Thank you for logging into Parry Sound Community Radio Association!
This site is about introducing the people of the West Parry Sound Municipalities to our organization, federally incorporated as a not-for-profit undertaking with the goal of establishing a community radio station to serve the West District. We invite you to explore this site, learn about what community radio is all about, the people behind this, our plans and progress.
This type of broadcast model does well to put the individual, the local listener, first rather than a corporate shareholder. While community radio provides entertainment it also conducts a great deal of public service, generates information and educational programs, supports and advocates local sports, arts, culture and recreation, and provides training opportunities for aspiring broadcasters. Local dollars spent on community radio stay in the community. There was a time when the same statement could be made of local commercial radio stations because they were locally owned. Today's landscape sees out-of-town, out-of-province ownership where the bulk of local dollars spent on advertising goes elsewhere favouring the shareholder.
Early 2024 News Update
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced a two-year moratorium on new radio applications last summer. While this has caused some delay, it has not discouraged us. We are simply taking this extra time to build a stronger, weightier, more thorough application. As a result of the moratorium we have delayed some of our board action until now, in February, when we are working full speed once again. We recently sent out some 170 packages to area businesses and organizations with an enclosed endorsement form to be sent back and which we will compile and include in our application. Each signed endorsement adds a great deal of weight, relevance and significance to our application. We are encouraged by the number of forms that are coming back and we thank you for your support.
We have joined the National Campus and Community Radio Association for additional support and guidance.
Progress in this endeavour includes having established a broadcast pattern through the efforts of our engineer. He has also selected a frequency that is the best available in this area. We have established a transmitter site and we have our eye on potential locations for office and studio. We also have reserved, telephone numbers for studio and office which are parallel to our frequency.
As a not-for-profit organization benefiting the community we are a candidate for particular funding under the banner of social and community structure. While such grants cover capital costs, it will be necessary to raise seed money to get rolling. In addition to corporate fundraising, we will be endeavouring to initiate several fundraisers. Please watch for these, possibly including crowd funding as we get rolling.
Our goal is to submit a complete application to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) by the end of this year, 2024. Programming, volunteer recruitment and training are also on the horizon.
